The 2018 Special Olympics USA Games started on July 1 in Seattle, Wash., with a whirlwind Opening Ceremonies celebration at University of Washington’s Husky Stadium that saw the arrival of more than 39,000 attendees, of which more than 4,000 were participating athletes and coaches. Several celebrities and performers attended the Games, including musicians Charlie Puth, DJ Marshmello and Ann Wilson, as well as famed WWE performers Mark Henry and Charlotte Flair. Washington Governor Jay Inslee delivered an address on his state’s inclusion values as he welcomed the athletes to the start of the Games, and Timothy Shriver, son of Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver, briefly took the stage as the Special Olympics’ chairman. “We’re here to take a stand for a different America, because we see a different America,” Shriver said. “It’s an America that we can already say that, without fear or favor, I choose to include.”
