“Your songs on your wrist” is the new battle cry at Garmin, which just yesterday announced the release of its latest product, the Forerunner 645 Music. This watch represents Garmin’s first step into the music realm, with storage space for up to 500 songs that can be downloaded directly onto the watch via a computer file transfer or from select music streaming apps (like iHeartRadio). Once runners load their music selection onto the device, all they need is a pair of Bluetooth headphones (sold separately) and they’re set to run.
Though brands like Apple, Nike and Fitbit have developed several music-run technologies in recent years, this is Garmin’s first–and it may be the product that inspires competitors to bring their A-game in 2018. The Forerunner 645 Music packs the full Garmin punch, with 24/7 heart rate monitoring, social networking via Garmin Connect, real-time training feedback (including pace, cadence, stride length and other running metrics assessments) and Garmin Pay, which the brand introduced last year as a special feature of its vivoactive 3.
“Listening to music helps most of us keep our momentum going during those long or particularly difficult runs,” Vice President of Worldwide Sales Dan Bartel said of the new watch in an official press release. “With the addition of integrated music and Garmin Pay, the Forerunner 645 Music will help give athletes the independence they’ve been looking for while still providing them with the quality and accuracy of our other running products that they have come to rely on.”
