Women’s Running Seeks A Sales Director

Pocket Outdoor Media, the parent company of VeloNews, Triathlete and Women’s Running, seeks a full-time sales director to head up the advertising sales operation across all brands. He/she will have at least two years of hands-on sales management experience, and extensive digital, social and print ad sales experience in cycling, triathlon and/or run categories. Responsibilities include management of brand-specific advertising sales people and support staff, development of sales materials, budgeting and meeting sales goals. Reports directly to CEO and based in Boulder, Colo. Sales Director for Pocket Outdoor Media, LLC (POM)

Summary / Objectives

Develops, implements and manages worldwide advertising strategy for Company’s media brands (VeloNews, Triathlete and Women’s Running), from a business, sales, marketing and technical perspective. Develops budget and projections for advertising. Initiates and manages discussions and sales activities with all sponsors and agencies. Manages the development of sales marketing materials including media kits, reader surveys and specific issue promotions. Manages database, billing, collections and contracts. Must be intimately familiar with digital business models and technologies. Responsible for directing and implementing effective trade advertising campaigns, and ensuring all advertising efforts work toward the organization’s overall goals and objectives. Has supervisory responsibilities of entire department, which includes individual brand salespeople and support staff. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A wide degree of creativity and initiative is expected.

Scope and Impact

Scope and impact is Company-wide. Revenue generated from sales department strongly affects the bottom-line profits of overall POM enterprise.

  • Supervisory responsibility: Must have ability to direct, motivate, and develop staff. Must be sensitive to individuals as well as the team. Must be able to set goals and develop strategies to achieve them.
  • Strong background in media sales and sales techniques. Must be familiar with digital business models and technologies. Knowledge of outdoor sports market/industry, specifically cycling, multisport and running.
  • Must be able to assess options and convey opinions effectively to Publisher. Must be sensitive to goals of the company as well as the individual brand. Must be able to set priorities for the sales department.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Necessary to deal effectively with a wide range of personalities – both within the company and outside.

Work Environment: This job operates in a media/publishing setting.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position based on-site in Boulder, Colorado. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Required Education, Experience and other Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree beneficial
  • Three-years (minimum) of proven, hands-on, sales experience in a rigorous, time-sensitive environment
  • Management experience preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Self-motivated and self-directed
  • Ability to work closely with senior management team
  • Strong MS Word, Excel, and Outlook skills. Datatrax knowledge a plus.


As the company grows, this position will increasingly involve the management of a larger sales team. Management responsibilities will include:

  • Allocate accounts
  • Ensure data bases are understood, maintained and productively utilized
  • Plan and approve travel and appointments
  • Oversee and approve contracts: ensure that contracts are signed and enforceable
  • Negotiate contracts where necessary
  • Review and approve all discounted rates
  • Review, assist and approve advertising proposals
  • Review, assist and approve contract proposals and negotiations
  • Train and develop new sales team members

 Assist publisher with:

  • Creating annual goals, bonus structure for ad sales team
  • Promotion planning and execution
  • Advertising planning and execution
  • Media kit planning
  • Research, Surveys, subscriber studies
  • Colleague reviews
  • Sales policy development and enforcement


  1.  Must respect well-known advertising/editorial integrity of POM media brands
  2. Must work to improve advertising yields while simultaneously increasing volume
  3. Develop and expand advertising categories – new non-endemic and endemic sponsors, event-win advertising, events, etc.
