How To Be Included When You Can’t Make A Race Vacation

Etiquette expert and runner Lizzie Post knows a thing or two about the rules of the road. The great-great granddaughter of etiquette’s original reigning queen, Emily Post, has tips for how to navigate sticky situations–including the times when real life gets in the way of your race-cation plans.

A bunch of my girlfriends are planning a race trip together and I can’t go. I don’t want to be left out completely, so do you have any tips?

With today’s technology, you can do so many things to stay connected to your friends. With a little bit of planning, you can easily be part of the trip without actually going. Here are four ideas to get you started:

  • Use speakerphone or the car’s phone-to-speaker system if available. You can literally join in the conversation to feel like you’re there.
  • Same with video chatting. You might ask whoever finishes first to call you and face the phone to the finish line so you can cheer your friends across.
  • Track your friends if the race offers this feature.
  • Send them off with little goody bags!

You don’t want to try to insert yourself too much or make it a hassle for anyone. But letting your friends know how much you want to be there will result in good feelings all around!
