Read This Before Running Off Stress

Running on Fumes

Your boss called you out in a meeting in front of the whole team? Your girlfriend flaked on you for the fifth time this month? When you feel steam coming out of your ears, the best thing to do might seem to be lacing up your shoes and sweating out the rage—but slow your roll.

A 2016 study published in Circulation, a journal from the American Heart Association, looked at more than 12,000 men and women who had experienced heart attacks. The research showed that coupling emotional distress with exercise significantly increased the risk of a dangerous episode.

Over the course of your lifetime, running is great for your ticker—but if you’re feeling furious, try a calming walk, deep breathing or calling a trusted friend first.
