FAT GIRL RUNNING
By Mirna Valerio
Rabun Gap, GA
“Running is an easy and fantastic way to dial into whatever level of fitness you desire, to condition for other sports and to maintain your weight. More importantly though, running allows me to connect with the outdoors in the way that humans are designed to. I get to spend hours outside breathing in fresh air, enjoying my surroundings in the mountains, city and suburbs invigorating my mind, body and spirit.”
Favorite piece of running gear…(she has two!)
The North Face GTD Capri Tights—“I wear them everywhere”—and Nathan VaporCloud Hydration Vest (men’s version)—“works better for my front side, if you know what I mean!”
Why did you start running?
I started running freshman year of high school, in 1989 as a way of becoming a better athlete in field hockey and lacrosse.
What has been your favorite race?
I have two. The one that I keep coming back to: Finger Lakes 50s 50k and my most recent ultra, the Javelina Jundred.
What is the one piece of advice you can give to someone who is considering an ultramarathon?
Sign up for one and train (and after registering, you can work on getting over your fears and doubts.) It really is that simple.
How do you fit in time to train with work and family commitments?
I work out super early in the mornings, either on my treadmill, at the gym, or on my school track. I have the advantage of living where I work at a boarding school. For long runs, I either run loops around my house, checking in on my son periodically, or I hire a student babysitter. My self-care routine is important to the healthy functioning and general happiness of my family so I make sure to fit it in where I can, almost every day.
