4 Fitness Challenges For A Better New Year’s Day

Want to wake up feeling refreshed on the first day of the New Year and still have a rocking good time the night before? Me too. Hangovers are not for healthy chicks, and sugary drinks loaded with regret do not make for a happy intro to 2016.

Why not start a new trend and have a fitness themed New Year’s Eve party? Follow these steps to your best year yet:

Step One: Mix Up Some Mocktails

In case you haven’t perused Pinterest during the holiday season, I’ll get you up to speed on some of the healthiest and most hydrating drink choices:

Not Quite Champagne – Lime Bubbly

No One Spiked The Punch Bowl – Cranberry Citrus Punch

Drink Your Antioxidants – Vanilla Cranberry Cider

Spritz Your Sweat – Cherry Spritz

Step Two: Let the Games Begin!

Holiday HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) List

Dancing is a must on the big night, and a great way to shed a few more calories, before the year moves ahead. Decorate like a disco and go wild! Make a playlist of your favorite songs from 2015 (maybe even take requests prior to the big night), incorporate some strength moves like push-ups, burpees, squat jumps and crunches for the slower tunes and you’ve got yourself a HIIT.

Playlist party tip: Some amazing artists are already slated to ring in the “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest.” Start your pre-game to their live performances and add some of your favorites from this year’s featured artists: 5 Seconds of Summer, Fall Out Boy, Andy Grammar, Tove Lo and Rachel Platten.

Another great option is finding a Daybreaker party near you! It’s basically an early morning dance party turned cardio workout. They typically start at 6 a.m., which is a great way to start your day on January 1.

Resolution Reps

January is the month of resolutions but is also a time of reflection. Before you chose a lofty goal for 2016, pause to remember what you vowed to be or do in 2015. How did that work out?

Set up a fitness station for each participant (push-ups, bicep curls, squats, crunches, etc.) and as each member proudly or shamefully states their intention from the previous year, count the days or months they completed or worked toward their goal, and do an equal number of repetitions.

Example: “I trained for and ran a marathon on April 26, 2015!” You now need to do 115 reps, if going by days, or four if going by months. You choose.

Ball Drop It Like A Squat

The annual ball drop in New York City is probably the most watched television event of the night. Instead of doing a lame countdown, make a squat challenge out of it. Here’s how:

  1. Ask each guest to bring a squat variation, or have a few ready. If you need ideas, there are plenty.
  2. Do at least 10 repetitions for each squat variation and several sets prior to the ball drop. You can time intervals, create a countdown, put it to music; whatever makes it interesting as long as you do them.
  3. When the big moment arrives, 10 seconds from midnight, see how many variations you can remember and do one for each number as you countdown to the New Year!
  4. The “winner” gets to pick her favorite squat and make the whole party do as many as she sees fit.

Run In The New Year

I cannot think of a better way to celebrate another year then to run though the streets, just before midnight! There are plenty of New Year’s Eve organized races out there but you could also just invite your closest and most willing friends to run it out around your hood, until the end of the year.
