16-year old Mary Cain is on a roll. Within seven short days Cain blazed two national high school girls records. This speedy junior first made history on January 26 of this year when she broke the oldest national record in high school girls track by running an indoor mile in 4:32.78. With a six second lead over the previous fastest time set in 1972, Cain gained national attention as she headed into the 2-mile event at the New Balance Grand Prix Women’s Race in Roxbury, Mass. this past weekend. Lining up next to three-time Olympic gold medalist Tirunesh Dibaba from Ethiopia, Cain was excited to hit the track with the Olympian. Little did she know, she was about to carve her own place in history.
With her impressive final lap kick and finishing time of 9:38.68, Mary Cain won third place and shattered the previous national record by more than 17 seconds.
