After running a half marathon in 2008, Sarah from Skinny Runner, was hooked on racing and has since completed over 40 marathons! Find out why Sarah’s way of rewarding herself for a good race is to register for another. . .
Women’s Running: How would you describe yourself?
Sarah: I’m a SoCal housewife who attempts to be a halfway decent blogger and loves running marathons, Jesus, my Yorkie (best dog in the world!), and a nice glass of sparkling wine.
WR: How did you begin running?
S: I always played sports throughout high school and college and ran occasionally, but it wasn’t until the fall of 2008 when a girlfriend asked me to run the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco that I really got into running. After that race I was hooked and started running more and eventually built up the mileage and ran my first marathon in December 2009 in Las Vegas.
WR: What keeps you running and training?
S: I love to run marathons and I feel best when I can go run one on a whim – basically I like to be in marathon shape year round or close to it so that keeps me motivated to keep running and getting those long runs in.
S: The run I probably do most is a low key 10 miler, but I like long runs. I never hit the track! I should, but I just don’t have it in me to do much speed work.
WR: What’s your favorite race memory?
S: I’ve run a lot of great races, 40 marathons now and countless halfs, but I was able to run with my younger brother for his first marathon in Eugene, Oregon, a couple years ago. I also ran a marathon in honor of my nephew who had open heart surgery at birth which was really special. And for numbers and stuff like that, I ran the Carlsbad Marathon last January with a friend and although it was incredibly difficult, I was able to run faster than I ever thought I could.
WR: What do you hope your readers will get from reading your blog?
S: I hope that my readers are inspired to work hard, make audacious goals and get after it. Sometimes seeing someone else reach their goals or work for them is all it takes to inspire you to do the same.
WR: How do you reward yourself for accomplishing your training/running goals?
S: I sign up for another race. Marathons aren’t cheap so I reward myself with a pricier, fun race that I’ve been eyeing and wanting to do.
WR: Best running advice you’ve received or given?
S: Just get out the door and go. Don’t worry about anything else.
