RUNNING LESS IS MORE... I’d spent the years leading up to my injury training hard. But while recuperating from my bum knee, I was forced to scale back my intensity and mileage. Instead of losing fitness, I came back stronger than ever, breaking 40 minutes in the 10k and 1:30 in the half marathon for the first time in my life. It turns out that during those years of pushing my body to the limit, I was actually overtraining.

INJURIES DO HEAL...As of last January, I was tending to a knee injury that had kept me from running for six months. I was afraid I might never race long distances again. But guess what? It healed, just like injuries always do. To all my sidelined runners out there: Stay strong!

RUN YOUR OWN RACE: You know those mantras you’ve heard a million times but never really understood? That’s what “run your own race” was for me. It always sounded like a good idea, but last spring I put it into action for the first time ever. Instead of feeling pressured to run a certain pace, I focused solely on how I felt at every mile. I crossed the finish line feeling better than I ever have after a race, with a new PR in tow.

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE MARATHON: It doesn’t matter if you’ve done one marathon or 100—this race is an untamed beast! On an unseasonably hot, humid day in Cleveland, I learned this one the hard way. I thought I’d be able to cruise into the finish with a Boston Qualifying time, but I ended up bonking and finished with only 30 seconds to spare.

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE YOURSELF... Like a lot of women, I have body image issues. But last fall I surprised myself by signing up for a naked 5k—and winning! If you’d asked me a year ago if I’d ever do something that crazy, I would have said, Hell no. The experience turned out to be life-changing. And it earned me the title of 2012 National Women’s Nude Running Champion. My mom is so proud.

SPREAD THE LOVE: Speaking of family, 2012 proved to me that sharing your passion for running with people you love is even more fun than running yourself. My mom ran (and won!) her first 5k and my dad joined me for his first 5k later in the year. I can’t wait to see what we do together in 2013!
