The "10K a day" rule first emerged as a goal distance for walking groups in Japan during the 1960s.
Following her victory at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, Shalane Flanagan was ready for her close up. Women’s Running met up with Shalane at the Nike Campus where the elite runner trains. Shalane showed up solo to the shoot aside from one special companion – her Olympic bronze medal.
Makeup artist Lindsay Hale (lindsayhale.com) helped brighten Shalane’s lips and cheeks. Fun fact: The Olympic runner tints her eyelashes so she doesn’t have to worry about mascara running down her face during a race.
