We love our latest Women’s Running magazine Blogger On The Run- Page from Twenty-Six & Then Some! She’s a sassy redhead who runs for the journey (and to eat cupcakes!). This creative chic keeps us inspired as she continues to chronicle her adventure in training for her first Ironman distance triathlon. Read on to find out how Page began a steamy love affair with running:
WR: How would you describe yourself?
P: My name is Page Williams and I’m a clumsy, California redhead working in digital public relations/marketing in San Francisco. Truth be told, I actually spend my day dreaming about swimming, biking, and running as I am training for my first Ironman (Ironman Arizona).
I was recently married in July of 2011 and carry any of the usual traits of a 26-year-old Leo: obsessed with my dog, craves creativity, generally undeterred, could probably sleep standing up, and can usually be found with a wild, untamed mane.
WR: How did you begin running?
P: I was a high school cheerleader and a mediocre track athlete who puttered around in the 100 and hurdles. I’m not sure why or how I found my way onto the sprinting track team, but I did and I was horrible. No seriously, I was cringe-worthy. I have no idea what I was doing there and I was always one of the last ladies to finish. Throughout the years, I started to realize that I was always secretly wishing that the team would do more long runs instead of running around the 400 meter hamster wheel. So finally, I made the jump, or casual walk, to the distance track team my senior year. But this great epiphany was a little too late as a hip injury left me on the side-lines, causing my new-found love for running to come to a screeching halt. With time and physical therapy, I was able to slowly start running again and from that moment on, it clicked. I had officially started my steamy love affair with running.
WR: What keeps you running and training?
P: Some people shop, others drink, I run. Running is my answer to life’s woes, questions and quandaries.
My family has some pretty daunting health issues and I’ve always found great relief knowing that I am the supportive sister, daughter, cousin, whatever. But every now and then I know I need to find a rock for my own sanity. While I definitely go to my husband, I choose to forgo complete meltdowns with running. My heart racing and the sweat dripping into my eyes is as cathartic as any therapy session could ever be – it’s a complete emotional release.
But we all know that not every run is a life changer and I also run because I like to see what I’m capable of. Set a seemingly impossible goal, push your limits, scare yourself, and really see what you’re made of. Just don’t forget to enjoy the journey along the way.
WR: What’s your favorite race memory?
P: I definitely have two favorite race memories. First is when I got engaged after the LA marathon. Long story short: I fueled improperly, met Alanis Morissette, puked in a pretzel bag, and my now husband still proposed to me on a Santa Monica beach near the finish. Second, would have to be when I qualified for Boston at the Chicago Marathon. That race and city forever hold a very special place in my heart.
WR: Best running advice you’ve received or given?
P: For a 5k, “run until your eyes bleed.” Just keep pushing yourself to that extreme limit because it’s over before you know it.
As for serious advice, it would have to be from my dad and when he reminds me that, “Anyone can run on a nice day.” Sure running is swell when it’s 70 degrees, sunny and you’re free of any nagging pains.. But what really makes a runner, and your character, is when you see adversity and still charge at it head on. It’s helped me through my running career and my life.
WR: What’s your favorite indulgent treat?
P: I eat dessert almost every night. Guilty as charged. My favorites include pumpkin or lemon merengue pie, coffee ice cream, or Sprinkle’s cupcakes. P.S. I still have yet to find a better cupcake than Sprinkle’s – challenge me if you dare.
