Question: When training for a full marathon, is it best to have one pair of shoes that you wear from start of training to the finish line, or should you have multiple pairs of shoes?
Answer from Coach Jenny Hadfield: There are definite benefits from utilizing multiple pairs of shoes when you’re training for a marathon. During longer runs shoes actually experience fatigue, which requires recovery time. By rotating shoes, you can extend the life of each pair because you’ve allowed them to return to full functionality before applying stress from impact of running.
Remember, the life of a running shoe can vary tremendously by user. Some people can log more than 500 miles on one pair of shoes, while others can only get 250 miles. The life of a shoe depends on many factors like the length of your training season, how many days per week you run, the distance of your runs, etc…. Make sure you track your mileage on each shoe in your log to find your best average time equation for shoe replacement.
