Post-Race Blues [PRB] noun : a temporary condition following a major running event; marked by feelings of aimlessness and anxiousness (otherwise known as a full-on funk)
Have you ever fallen prey to this affliction? Sunday will mark two weeks since I crossed the finish line at the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, and I’m starting to feel the PRB sinking in. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but after you’ve been focused on a goal for months, I think it’s natural to feel a bit of emptiness when it’s gone. I’m happy that I reached my objective, but I miss feeling that anticipation and excitement that a challenge brings. . .ya know?
In an effort to fill the void and shake the blues away, I’ve come up with a strategy I’m hoping will work. Here’s my three-step plan to get back on the sunny side of the running street. . .
1. Reconnect with non-running activities.
One downside of training hard for a goal is that it’s easy to lose sight of other things that grant you enjoyment and satisfaction. Over the next few weeks, I’m looking forward to a lot more hot yoga, Scrabble and cupcake baking.
2. Let yourself go.
I woke up last Saturday morning ready to go at 6 a.m. My body hadn’t gotten used to the idea that I could sleep in—I realized that there was no early-morning long-run to complete. I told myself to chill and go back to sleep.
That night, my boyfriend suggested we go out for dinner and drinks. I initially resisted—then I remembered that I didn’t have a recovery run that I wanted to fuel properly for. Maybe combating the blues with cheeseburgers and sleeping until ten isn’t the most productive use of my freed-up time. But it is kind of fun for a change!
3. Set a new goal!
To be honest, this step is the easiest—but also the most satisfying. I’m looking for a great fall race to put on my calendar. Knowing that I have a start date for training soon will make the relaxation period all the more…relaxing. Any suggestions? 🙂
