The WR cover runners continue to inspire our editor-in-chief in their strength and resilience.
Do you hear birds chirping and angels singing? That can only mean one thing. . .it’s new issue time!
Women’s Running’s May/June issue hit stands this week. From an editorial standpoint, every issue means literally hundreds of hours of work, but I couldn’t be happier with this month’s result.
First of all, doesn’t Olympian Jennie Finch look absolutely gorgeous? Second, you read those gold letters right. It’s our 50th issue! Can you believe it? I’m so proud of the publication and excited for the next 50 issues to come.
Here are my favorite things about our 50th installation, and a little behind-the-scenes peak. . .
1. Cover Model Momma
Who doesn’t love softball superstar Jennie Finch? She is such a strong athlete, businesswoman and mom, her beauty just shines out from the tips of her eyelashes and the ends of her hair. It wasn’t tough to get her camera ready. . .
Jennie finished the 2011 NYC Marathon after starting dead last in the race, behind more than 47,000 runners. For every person she passed, Timex donated $1 to the New York Road Runner’s Youth Program. Jennie ended up passing 30,000 runners! What a stud.
2. Making History, Kicking Butt
Aside from the opportunity to chat with Jennie, my favorite article to work on was “We’ve Run a Long Way Baby,” a look back at the last five decades of women’s running as a sport. In doing research for the article, I uncovered some pretty astounding facts.
The most shocking thing I noticed about press coverage on female athletics from the 1960s and 70s was the tone. It’s pretty clear that women runners were regarded as novelties at best. Journalists dubbed two female athletes “brothers” due to their muscular frames, while a writer covering one woman’s 6.5-mile race deemed it necessary to include that “eyewitnesses report . . .her dimensions are very good.”
Did you know the first sports bra was created in 1977? No wonder more women didn’t play sports in the early 20th century. I just can’t imagine. . .
3. Did someone say GIVEAWAYS?
For our 50th issue, we thought it would only be appropriate to give 50 gifts to our readers. From May 1-June 19, we’ll be giving away one prize per day right here on the Women’s Running blog. Get ready for some amazing stuff—a diamond necklace, Colorado vacation, treadmill, free massage, and GPS watch—just to name a few. I can’t wait!
What’s your favorite part of the new issue? Let me know here or on Twitter @jessiesebor!
